Who has a lathe then? Mine is a Chester DB7VS I got off ebay a while ago. Only modification is a quick release tool post. I'm mainly self-taught, but went on a 2 day course at Axminster tools which I thoroughly recommend. Lathe course

I have a Nearok SSB-5EK that I have had for about 30 yrs. Basically a rebadged Taiwanese machine. Like Steve the first thingI did was to replace the standard toolpost with a quick change toolpost.
The most important thing I learnt was that 3 jaw chucks are quick to use but not very accurate. On the other hand 4 jaw chucks, while accurate, are a pain to set up. There is a solution. Use ER colletts. They are very accurate and quick to use, no setting up being required.

Most of the time I use my ER collets, as you say they are accurate and mine are ER32 which takes diameters up to 20mm. Bonus is that they can also be used in my Mill which has identical collet chuck. I've only used my 4 jaw chuck the once - difficult to set up, and most of the work I've done so far has been of a 'concentric' nature rather than offset.

I have an old Myford 7 which is OK for 'jobbing ' but has worn so much that if you adjust the cross slide to remove the play in the most used position it binds elsewhere. Also lots of play in the tailstock. The cost of new or refurb'd parts is prohibitive.

Once we allowed to stand near each other, and be in someone else's workshop, I'm happy to come and have a look at it...
