When setting up a workshop you start with a workbench and selection of hand tools. The next thing is to add one or more machine tools. So the question is what do you get first. In my workshop by far the most commonly used tool is the drill.
To be clear I am not refering to a DIY drill in a bench stand but a bench mounted pillar drill. If you then add a X-Y table you can not only accurately position holes but also do some light milling. The most important thing when making purchase is to check the rigidity of the piillar. Put your hand on top of the drill head and push down. If the pillar flexes look for something better. If the budget will run to it a mill/drill should give bothe rigidity and the X-Y table.
Only once you have sorted out a good drill should you think about a lathe and then if you realy need it a mill.

Good advice and perspective - in my opinion Trevor.

Can't have too many machines! I think in my workshop the most used tool is actually the wood bandsaw. Building model boats, especially from scratch, requires a lot of wood cutting.
